In time for Mother's Day, Lakeside Quilting Guild donated nine baby quilts to Comer Children's Hospital. The quilts, handmade by members, were delivered to the Child Life Specialists at Comer, who work with the families of hospitalized children. Lakeside Quilters hopes the unique, bright and cheerful quilts will bring some pleasure and comfort to the families and children who receive them. Whether the recipient is a premature infant or a toddler hospitalized for a chronic illness, having a child in the hospital is stressful for families. The Child Life Specialists, who support families of hospitalized children in many different ways, welcome the donation. |

The Lakeside Quilting Guild had a happy donation day this month by giving nine baby quilts to Jackson Park Hospital. These donated quilts will be gifts for new mothers to cuddle with their babies. Each quilt goes home with the mother and baby when they leave the hospital. Our guild creates quilts for these area families who may otherwise not have any homemade items or or have little family support when they have a new baby arriving. We enjoy giving the gift of a cozy handmade quilts to these special mothers, and celebrate our partnership with Jackson Park Hospital!
Many thanks to Gracemary Rosenthal (Baby Quilt Program Coordinator), Pat Harper and Jackie Lipscomb (committee members) of Lakeside Quilting Guild for organizing the donation. Next Tuesday, May 12 we will meet at Treasure Island in the Cellar Room on the lower level. Socializing starts from 6:30 PM with the business meeting at 7 pm. Following the business meeting will be time to view the pink and purple guild quilt arrangement and finalize before assembly starts. We will hold the election for secretary during this meeting as well. Other topics on the agenda will be the Hyde Park Neighborhood Art Fair booth plans and sign up schedule, a look at programming during the summer months, a discussion about raffling off one of our guild quilts for a fundraising activity for the guild, and gathering feedback on the UCHP quilt show from members. We also hope to have a meet and greet with Quilter’s Trunk, a new store opening soon in Beverly neighborhood. A reminder to bring $20 for your dues renewal if you have not yet renewed for 2015-2016. Finally, those who wish to participate in this year’s Round Robin need to bring their 10 1/2 inch square center block in a plain white pillowcase, along with any (optional) extra fabric, small notebook, etc. Each participant will take home another center block in trade and create the first round by placing the block “on point” using setting triangles. The next exchange will take place at our July meeting. The PDF file with detailed instructions may be downloaded by clicking on the link below:
The guild's latest output of baby quilts is on its way to babies! Jackson Park Hospital and University of Chicago Hospital received donations of 9 quilts each. Guild members are encouraged to keep making more baby blankets and quilts -- there are always more babies out there! For photos of all the quilts, go to the Gallery and see them all! |
