Pagtinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island
Presented by Dana Jones You’ll be transported to a tiny island — just 13 acres — in the central Philippines as you enjoy images and stories of the colorful quilts and the more than 100 quiltmakers of Caohagan Island. You’ll see photos of more than 50 of these handmade, one-of-a-kind quilts plus be introduced to the unique techniques developed by these quiltmakers whose tools are simply fabric and scissors, needle and thread. I spent more than a month on the island, quilted with the residents, went fabric shopping with them on nearby Cebu Island, and snorkeled the reef that surrounds Caohagan. Those who view the quilts come away smiling, inspired by the creativity of these women and men. Tuesday, August 9, 2022 6:30-9PM CDT. Lecture starts at 7PM If you would like to attend this lecture, please contact [email protected] – The lecture is free to guild members and $5.00 for guests
Have you been unable to join us on Zoom? Miss seeing what everyone is working on? Come and look at the weekly LQG Show and Tell and be inspired! All of our April Show and Tell slides are ready for your enjoyment.
Look for the link on the right side of this page and "See our weekly "Show and Tell" slideshows" any time. But here for your immediate enjoyment is April 5th! Carole Lyles Shaw will be joining Lakeside Quilting Guild on Tuesday, April 12 at 7 pm for a lecture on what makes a modern quilt (pre-lecture gathering time starts at 6:30 pm).
Carole started teaching herself to quilt to make quilts for her wonderful nieces and nephews. She found her first quilting home with the African American Quilters of Baltimore, who gently taught her the best techniques to express her quilt vision. Today, she designs patterns to help beginning and experienced quilters confidently dive into modern quilting. she is excited about modern quilting because it is all about bringing individualism and free expression to the way we design and make quilts today. She hopes that her patterns will inspire you to find ways to let your own creative voice shine. If you would like to attend this lecture, please contact [email protected] -- The lecture is free to guild members and $5 for guests.
Aloha oe! We had a wonderful time eating, chatting, enjoying the tropical breezes and the Hawai'ian aloha spirit through the magic of Zoom travel. You might want to keep that aloha spirit going, so here is a dance along video of the song Regina and Pat shared with us. Mahalo nui for coming along on our travels. (Don't forget to check out theshow and tell too!)

The Lakeside Quilting Guild pandemic group quilt is on display at the Hyde Park Art Center (5020 S. Cornell Avenue, www.hydeparkart.org/) through mid-April. Our textile interpretations and a book with our thoughts while creating the work will be on view.
A selection of photos and memories for our dear quilting sister, Michele.
Earlier this year, several of our guild members decided to undertake a challenge to make a block each week using the quilt as you go technique. A few folks have finished theirs off and shared at the reveal earlier this summer. We look forward to seeing more as they are completed
Lakeside Quilting Guild members have been busy creating during the summer months and recently gathered together for a virtual retreat. Members "traveled" to Germany, and then to Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. We learned about quilting in Germany and their national guild Patchwork Gilde patchworkgilde.de/, enjoyed a presentation by Miriam Galadima-Benson, owner of Quilt Africa Fabrics, enjoyed photos and videos from a Kenyan safari, and got a guided tour of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Members shared their retreat projects and more in our Show and Tell. Enjoy the show here. You can also see all out past Show and Tell slides in this Google folder |
