The WMQFA happily announces its first block education club, based on the popular book, “The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt.” Beginning on June 20, club members will get three hours of instruction by local experts Nora Rader and Grace Marko, followed by lunch and a docent-lead tour of the current WMQFA exhibit. Over four sessions, club members will learn two ways to complete 48 blocks. One technique will use acrylic templates, and the other will be non-template-based. WMQFA will also be offering club members a selection of 22 fabrics from the Windham “Embroidered Garden” collection, which can be purchased in fat quarters, half-yard pieces, and from the bolt. Class dates are June 20, September 19, November 14 and February 13 (2014). Classes will be held at the museum at N50 W5050 Portland Road in Cedarburg, and will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch is included in the class price. Monthly “sit-and-sew” sessions will be offered to club members as well. The teachers bring 110 years of collective sewing experience to class sessions! Grace Marko is a merchant, through her online store “All Hands Around” and at quilt shows throughout the Midwest. Nora Rader is a former president of the Wisconsin Quilters Inc., a statewide guild. She is also a certified instructor for the “Sew Confident” program by Linda Lee and the Sewing Workshop. All levels of quilters can join this club, from beginner through experienced. This club is intended to combine informative demonstrations and hands-on experience with the joy of relaxing with friends at our 1850s farmstead. You can register at the museum or online (follow the link below). As a special incentive to those who sign up for our first program (June 20) you will get the program, a bundle of 22 fat quarters, and seven acrylic templates for $90. Club members must have the book, “The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt.” The museum will sell copies of this book. What are your associations with this element? Quilters from around the world are invited to join the second International Block Swap (IBS2). Make 9 quilt blocks with a water theme and send them to the Munich office. All participants will be grouped into teams and the blocks will be swapped within the team. You will get back your own block plus 8 different blocks from quilters around the world. Blocks will be sent to our Munich office. Quilters may also take part in creating a "Water for the World" community quilt by creating a 10th block with the water theme. All the donated blocks will be assembled into a single quilt. To take part, please download the enclosed PDF flyer below and fill in the registration form. Registration is $25 for US participants and all directions are included in the flyer. Is your stash piling up? Are you feeling bogged down by a big project and want a change? Want to switch to a new fiber art for a while? Then it's time to make some baby blankets!
Teen Mom Clinic at the University of Chicago medical center is running low on baby blankets. So we're putting the call out to guild members to donate some new blankets. This will not be a coordinated guild community project, just a call to individual members to help as you are able. Jane McAtee at the Clinic says they can use any type of baby blanket -- receiving blankets, knitted, crocheted, or quilted blankets, out of any materials (natural or synthetic). Work can be by hand or machine. Katherine L. will be happy to collect the blankets for delivery to Jane, or bring them to a regular Tuesday meeting and we'll be sure that they get to where they are needed. (Hmmmm..... Now to go home and look at that stash! I'm sure I have some cute flannel in there somewhere.) Lakeside Quilting Guild is hosting an evening with Leslie Goddard, Executive Director of Graue Mill and Museum. An experienced Civil War historian, she has created portrayals of Civil War notables Clara Barton and Mary Chestnut, and serves on the board of the Chicago Civil War Roundtable. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University specializing in American studies and U.S. history. Unraveling the History of Civil War Quilts Tuesday, March 12, 2013 7:00-9:00 PM Treasure Island Supermarket, 55th and Lake Park Avenue Lower Level Community Room $15 for guild members, $20 for guests Seating is limited, so email [email protected] to reserve a place today. Light refreshments will be served. A printable PDF flyer is available below - spread the word! Unravelling the History of Civil War Quilts. Some have said that during the American Civil War, women fought as furiously with their needles as men did with their swords. By 1865, an estimated 250,000 quilts had been made for the soldiers. They not only provided physical warmth and protection, they also encouraged flagging spirits, commemorated significant experiences, functioned as fundraisers, and became vehicles for patriotic and political expression. This program presents a close-up look at eight significant quilts with ties to the Civil War, examining both their aesthetic merit and their cultural context.
