Lakeside Quilting Guild members have been busy creating during the summer months and recently gathered together for a virtual retreat. Members "traveled" to Germany, and then to Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. We learned about quilting in Germany and their national guild Patchwork Gilde patchworkgilde.de/, enjoyed a presentation by Miriam Galadima-Benson, owner of Quilt Africa Fabrics, enjoyed photos and videos from a Kenyan safari, and got a guided tour of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Miniature Quilts for the every-day Quilter
Join the Lakeside Quilting Guild on Tuesday, June 8 @ 6:30 for an evening with Kellie Willey. The presentation is free to LQG members, and open to guests for fee of $5.00. (Guests, email [email protected] for more information on how to register). Members will receive the Zoom link information in their email prior to the event. You can’t believe everything you hear! For years, quilters have been telling us that making a miniature quilt is harder that making a large quilt! This is simply not true and Kellie Willey enjoys busting this myth. She believes that learning how to create a small-scale quilt can be FAST, FUN and REWARDING! Enjoy hearing how to quickly and accurately make a miniature quilt from a person who is not afraid to go tiny and loves to share that passion! Kellie Willey has been quilting for 12 years and is passionate about making miniature and small-scale quilts. She enjoys taking large traditional patterns and miniaturizing them using various methods. Kellie has won many awards for her little quilts and enjoys teaching others the love of small-scale quilt making. During her lecture, you will hear tips and techniques that will take the fear out of miniature quilting. You will also have a front row seat (from your computer) to view several of her little quilts up close. Kellie encourages quilters to enjoy the process and get comfortable with scaling down their work. Her philosophy is "You already know how to cut, piece and sew, and it's easy to make it smaller once you know the tricks”. Kellie’s teaching style is fun and relaxed and during her workshops, most students leave with a finished quilt top! Kellie recently started producing her own line of miniature quilt patterns which are available on her website at www.littlequiltcreations.com. LQG Show and Tell slides are available for viewing on Google drive, just click and enjoy!
Our members have shared their work via a Google slide show each week since February and now you can go back and see the Show and Tell again. Permissions have been set to viewing only. Weekly slide shows are listed and after clicking to open the Google slides file, simply click the Present button (upper right corner) to view the slides on your device. Join us at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 9 for a special presentation. This event is free to members of the Lakeside Quilting Guild and open to guests to attend for a fee of $5 per person. Guests should contact [email protected] to register and receive the link. Members will receive the information through email as usual.

Sharing knowledge, encouraging creativity, and teaching new skills are personal passions. David also loves to travel, especially in Asia, and enjoys sharing his experiences and inspiration through travel photos and stories. Guild member Cheryl writes of this quilt:
"What is black and white and red (read) all over? goes the old children's riddle...Answer: a newspaper! This color scheme happens to be a favorite of my friend, Brenda, and she was due for a quilt. I planned on using a variety of black, white and red pieces for each arc but decided it looked way too busy. So some of the arcs are pieced but all white or mostly all black. Other arcs I made of just one piece. It's quilted in the ditch, except for the centers where I used simple designs in variegated black and white thread. I like the effect produced because part of the thread color disappears against the center's color, eg. the heart design fades out.” On Friday, January 15, and Saturday January 16 we went on a virtual quilting retreat to Thailand. And we had a wonderful time! The retreat featured beautiful video of Thailand sites, a hospitality bag of a silk robe or scarf, pretty fabric, and a Kao Soi curry seasoning mix packet. What a treat! We had a delightful guest teacher from Thailand on Friday night, and we marveled at her beautiful work and kindness. We had needed yoga stretching and breathing sessions throughout taught by one of our own. Additionally, one of our own taught a quilted postcard class on Saturday afternoon and now many of our members are hooked. We all worked on numerous projects as evidenced by the pictures below. We cooked Thai food together and ate Thai dishes from various "local" restaurants. We are looking forward to our next retreat and are still bathing in the afterglow of this one! In the words of our member from Germany, “it was a really phantasmic journey.” Make a donation to receive a handmade mask or hand sanitizer holder. Masks and holders are available in a wide variety of fun fabrics. Some are shown below, but many others are also available. Recommended donation for masks is $10.00 each for adult versions large or medium (plus shipping if needed), and $8.00 each for children’s versions. They can be made with either ties or elastic. If interested, contact Lakeside Quilting guild at [email protected] to let us know what you would like and to get details on how to make your donation.
Donation for hand sanitizer holders is $8.00. Bottle (but not sanitizer) is included. All proceeds benefit the Lakeside Quilting Guild's outreach programs. A registered 501(c)3 LQG's members have made and donated thousands of masks to food pantries, medical centers, retirement communities, and other community organizations. Dear Friends and Families of Lakeside Quilters Guild,
2020 has been a challenging and invigorating year: We transitioned to online meetings to stay connected to our members, made over 2,500 masks for Chicago hospitals, nursing homes and first responders, provided financial support to the Hyde Park Art Center and the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts, and donated comfort quilts and pillowcases to those affected by the Oregon wildfires. Because of Covid19 quarantine we are unable to raise funds through our traditional venues of the quilt show, craft shows & art fairs. Thus, we are respectfully asking for a small donation this Giving Tuesday, Dec 1, so that we can continue to support our 2021 program for our member and quilting community. We are a 501(c)(3) organization. October 13, 2020 Meeting Program Brightly colored, dramatic wearable art, the indigenous clothing of Mexico and Guatemala displays embroidery and weaving skill that encompass historical symbolism, consummate expertise, and artistic beauty. The ancient techniques of construction and embellishment continue today with modern materials. Still, the textiles contain the designs and patterns that have held meaning in the culture for centuries. The tradition of beautifully woven and embroidered Guatemalan fabrics and their connection to Maya culture intrigues me, especially because our local community has welcomed Guatemalan refugees for a number of years. In this presentation we will follow the journey of one small village to bring back textile traditions to their young people, and experience a visit to two rural indigenous communities where women are weaving for a Fair-Trade organization.
Members of the Lakeside Quilting Guild came together via the magic of Zoom to hold a virtual retreat. We kicked off our retreat with a video train ride to ZigZag OR. People turned out in their finery, sporting fashionable hats for the journey. We had a workshop on quilt assembly using a webbing technique, drawings for door prizes, lovely shared meals (second breakfast with waffles, taco night), And of course, time for chatting and sewing...
